One of the basic ideas behind neuro linguistic programming is that we can never know the way things really are.
All that we experience and see; or what we choose to think and believe is based on perception. It's relatively simple in that if you make a decision to change how you perceive a thing (in your world or mind), then other ways of thinking about it would change. Of course, staying within reason and logic; but think about the control we really do have in our lives if we can willfully change our perception. That idea is the cornerstone of Neuro Linguistic Programming, and so many of the practices incorporate that idea. Once you realize that you are in control of your reality, you can re-create it any way you want.
There is a highly effective technique called reframing in NLP, and the skillful application of it can change a person's entire life. So when you reframe something you work to alter how you think, or believe, about something in particular. In many instances, reframing allows us to feel better about something, or at least take away a negative feeling we have about it. Not surprising, but advertising/sales and politics often make heavy use of reframing. Not surprisingly, again, we look at politics and very often notice that both sides will use this NLP technique to sway opinion in their favor. So with a younger and older candidate, the younger will say the other may be too old for the job; while the older will say there that age confers experience and wisdom.
The willingness to take a deep look at what you believe, and then have the courage to go beyond and change your perceptions is critical to changing your life. Most people have beliefs about themselves that they picked up in childhood and never question.
Here's a simple example - perhaps you were told, as a child, that you didn't have any type of talent for music. The typical response is that child will grow up to be someone who believes he has no talent for music. The path to being free of that limiting belief is for the adult to question the validity of that belief. NLP teaches you that your beliefs about yourself and the world are not fixed and can always be changed. That is just one small example, and there are so many more instances in which NLP can make a positive difference.
Neuro Linguistic Programming can be applied to very many life situations, and maybe that is one reason why people use it so much. There is so much more to NLP than we have talked about, and the range of uses is pretty amazing, we think. Of course we suggest that you learn more, and avoid any trepidation about what is possible.
